The Golden Dome and the Militarization of Space
Space, the final frontier of human exploration and a vast field of cooperation among states, is steadily evolving into the new domain of geopolitical confrontation among the great powers of the international system. A characteristic development is the recent announcement of the Golden Dome program by President Trump. In short, the Golden Dome is an advanced defensive system aimed at protecting the continental United States from any threat, even those originating from space. Could this be the turning point in the militarization of space?
From the Cold War to the New Space Doctrine
The military use of Space is not new. Since the Cold War era, President Reagan’s Star Wars initiative demonstrated America's intention to neutralize any Soviet nuclear advantage. The U.S. technological superiority and the Soviet Union’s essential economic inability to keep up with the tech race led, a few years later, to its definitive collapse and the dissolution of the communist bloc. U.S. hegemony was confirmed on all levels, and space shifted primarily to the responsibility of scientific agencies like NASA and ESA, with military uses limited to satellite communications and surveillance.
However, the “Pax Americana” essentially ended with China’s rapid rise, establishing it as the only reliable strategic rival of the U.S., along with Russia’s resurgence. Specifically, China with its Beidou satellite system, Russia with GLONASS, and other powers like India, aim to strategically decouple from American geolocation infrastructure (GPS). At the same time, they are developing weapons capable of entering low orbit and other anti-satellite systems. All the above points to the pursuit of long-range strike capabilities using outer space. This is, in brief, the new dynamic unfolding in the ongoing strategic competition between the U.S. and the revisionist powers China and Russia.
The American Response
Recently, the American government officially unveiled its new defense program: the Golden Dome. The latter, aspires to become an American network for monitoring and intercepting ballistic/hypersonic threats that could also come from outer space. Modeled after Israel's Iron Dome, the American version is designed to function as a technologically superior anti-air dome capable of covering U.S. territory, fully protecting the U.S. by neutralizing the nuclear capabilities of its rivals. President Trump even urged Canada to voluntarily become the 51st U.S. state to receive the system for free; otherwise, it would have to pay $61 billion.
